Our journey to creating a harmoniously blended family has been filled with love, laughter, and a few challenges. One of the most beautiful aspects of blending our families has been witnessing the growth of our children’s sibling relationships. With eight kids between us, creating those strong bonds was a priority. Today, we’d like to share some of our journey and real-world co-parenting advice that has assisted us.

Our Story: From Summer Camp to Blended Bliss (and Challenges!)

As some of you may know, Thomas and I were friends at summer camp more than two decades ago! We went our separate ways afterlife and had other plans, but in 2019, somehow we both ended up back where we started, each with a family of our own. Combining the two families was a leap of faith, and in all honesty, it wasn’t always easy.

The Initial Hesitations

“I recall the first few weeks,” Jeniece says, “there certainly were times of, ‘How are we going to make this work?’ The kids, particularly the older ones, had their routines and friendships established. Adding new siblings and dynamics was a big adjustment.”

Thomas continues, “There were times of competition, too. ‘Who gets the biggest slice of cake?’ or ‘Whose turn is it to choose the movie?’ These little things would sometimes get out of hand. We had to learn to handle those times with patience and understanding.”

5 Practical Strategies That Worked for Us

1.  Family Meetings and Open Communication

We began holding regular family meetings where we all could air our feelings and concerns. This provided a platform for the kids to open up.

Co-parenting resulted in us taking a united front and making sure that everyone got a hearing.

2.  Shared Activities and Adventures

We ensured that we planned frequent family outings and activities. From film nights to camping excursions, these common activities helped the children bond and have good memories.

“Our lake trip was a lifesaver,” says Jeniece. “Watching the kids laugh and play together, totally forgetting they were different, was just so heartwarming.”

3.  Individual Time and Attention

Having eight children, every child needed to be seen and felt special. We prioritized having individual talks, activities, and one-on-ones.

Thomas shares, “I initiated a ‘Dad’s Night’ with each of the children, doing something they wanted to do. It was an easy way of letting them know that they were special to me.”

4.  Building Family Traditions

We learned early on that relationship forcing does not work. So, we just allowed our children to bond at their speed. Some bonded through a common interest in basketball, and others bonded around music or video games. The idea was to provide space but present opportunities for bonding.

5.  Co-Parenting as a Team

Co-parenting with our exes has been critical. We’ve learned to talk and put the children first.

We do not talk badly about our previous relationships and stress that all parents in their lives are significant. This cohesion makes our children feel safe and nurtured.

Overcoming Common Challenges

Managing Rivalry and Jealousy

Jealousy is normal, particularly in big blended families. When tensions build, we remind our children that love isn’t sliced—love multiplies. Through rejoicing in every child’s uniqueness and maintaining quality one-on-one time, we smooth over tensions and remind everyone that they fit.

Adjusting to Different Parenting Styles

Merging families usually involves merging various parenting styles. From the beginning, we, as a couple, sat down to develop a cohesive parenting plan, making sure that discipline, rewards, and expectations were uniform across the board.

Building Trust Over Time

Trust doesn’t happen overnight, but it builds in tiny, mundane ways—a sibling assisting with homework, laughing together at dinner, or defending each other at school. We celebrate these wins and tell our kids that family isn’t always about blood—it’s about being there for one another.

Wrapping Up

The blending of our families has been an amazing journey. We’ve discovered that communication, patience, and a whole lot of love are the ingredients to strong sibling relationships.
